A novel Covid-19 strain, potentially more transmissible than earlier variants, has been identified in Kerala, India. The JN.1 variant was initially detected in Karakulam, Thiruvananthapuram, on December 8.

While the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported its detection in the US in September, the JN.1 strain is a descendant of the BA.2.86 variant, itself a sub-variant of Omicron. Although classified as a “variant of interest” by the World Health Organisation (WHO), the global public health risk associated with JN.1 is deemed low.

As instances of the JN.1 variant surge, understanding its signs and symptoms becomes paramount. Notable reported symptoms include fever, sore throat, runny nose, headaches, and occasional minor gastrointestinal issues. Patients commonly experience extreme fatigue and muscle weakness, with most cases manifesting mild upper respiratory symptoms that typically improve within four to five days.

Additionally, the JN.1 variant may present with loss of appetite and persistent nausea in some cases. Medical consultation is advised if these symptoms, especially when combined, are observed. Staying vigilant and seeking prompt medical attention contributes to effective management in the face of this evolving Covid-19 variant.
